The unsafe feeling of unpredictability

This is something that has been in the forefront of my attention for the last few days.

Unpredictability = Feeling unsafe.

Whether it be the unpredictable nature of the future of our world or the unpredictable emotions and behaviour of someone that we may need to engage with.

It brings about a feeling in the body. The survival brain is constantly assessing what's safe and what isn't. Sometimes, we sense it right from the beginning, but we ignore our instincts and pursue something anything. Then we say to ourselves, 'I should have known'. The thing is, you probably did.

When it comes to feeling safe around people, predictability of behaviour, authenticity, honesty, and congruence are behaviours and states that feel safe. It could be argued that unpredictability, inauthenticity, dishonestly, and incongruence ooze unsafe energy into the spaces around us.

Nature is predicatable. With seasonal changes, we usually know what to expect. It guides us through our year, the plants, the trees, the leaves, and the natural seasonal food.

In therapy, we aim to create a predictable, authentic, congruent, honest space.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree/disagree that unpredictability feels unsafe?
